The Republican president touted the latest U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and pledged to not back down on the North American Free Trade Agreement.
The agreement is the last leg of trade policy that the president has worked on with the Canadian and Mexican leaders since he took office. The president's lawyers will make their recommendation to the White House about whether he should pull out of the agreement before he leaves office in January.
A senior administration official told reporters on Tuesday that there is no intention to pull out of the deal.
The official said there are "numerous reasons" why the president should keep the deal. One of them is "because it's a good deal" that will help the United States, the official said.
"It has a lot of great positive elements," the official said. "The president has been very clear that if it's a good deal for America, he will sign it."
The president also addressed trade with China and said he has not made a decision about whether to continue imposing tariffs on Chinese goods.
Trump has set a deadline of Dec. 15 to decide whether to impose additional duties on China. He has accused Beijing of not living up to promises to change its unfair trade practices.
"We will see what happens at the end of the year," the president said. "I can't predict exactly what will happen."
